Kato Hideki
Kato Hideki is a composer, bassist, engineer and producer. He has been creating
music for TV, films and theatre since 1988.
His work intersperses composition and improvisation, integrating acoustic
and electric bass with language, analog and digital processed sounds. The result
is an interaction between prepared material and organic chance. His pieces resemble
the unpredictability of life itself: alternating between intent and impulse,
order and chaos, silence and sound. His work with other artists includes the
recently completed Death Ambient with Ikue Mori and Fred Frith; a cd-rom, Headless
Beast with Keitaro Terasaki; and composing the music for the Irondale Ensemble
production of August Strindberg's Ghost Sonata.
Since his arrival in New York in 1992, he has become an intergral part of the
downtown scene, As a bass player Kato appears on recordings by Tenko, Ikue Mori,
Ground-Zero, David Shea, Koichi Makigami, Samm Bennett, John King and Peril.
He has performed with John Zorn, Fred Frith, Marc Ribot, Nana Vasconcelos, Zeena
Parkins, Christian Marclay, Anthony Coleman, Arto Lindsay, Dougie Bowne, Sim
Cain, David Moss, Charles Hayward, Kramer, Yamatsuka Eye, Haino Keiji, Isso
Yukihiro and others.
