
Bruce Tovsky
bruce tovsky is a visual artist, video designer, sound artist and composer.
trained as a painter/printmaker, in graduate school he began to work with film,
video, audio, installation and performance. attending rutgers university, he
received his mfa degree in multimedia in 1979. moving to nyc in 1978 he created
and showed video and performance works at the kitchen, mudd club, danceteria
and a variety of other galleries and alternative spaces in the usa and europe.
after the move to the city, he began producing, mixing and doing sound design
and videos for downtown bands, including sonic youth, the model citizens, liquid
liquid, dog eat dog, y pants and the del byzanteens. as a film/video sound designer
and editor he worked with a cross-section of the downtown film scene and was
involved in projects with richard kern, beth and scott b, eric mitchell, and
many others. in 1982 he created a short videoart work titled "invaded" which
went on to tour extensively throughout the usa, europe and japan, and was featured
at the 1984 world's fair. "invaded" is in the collection of the kitchen and
the donnell film library. in the late 80's he began focussing more on music
composition, doing film and video scores and working extensively with choreographers.
he composed dance pieces for cydney wilkes, muna tseng, charles dennis, betsy
hulton, mary seidman and others. his dance scores have been performed at lincoln
center, joyce theater, the kitchen, ps122 and in spaces across the usa and europe.
with two partners he opened a recording studio, producing and engineering material
for tommy boy, sleeping bag, lydia lunch, foetus, karen finley and bernie worrell,
to name a few. during this period he also began working as a commercial video
editor, and spent the next decade editing documentaries, commercials, music
videos and long form television. some highlights of this period were music videos
for live, public image, big audio dynamite and junior reid. bruce has recently
been creating live video improvisations, collaborating with sound artist john
hudak on performances at diapason and experimental intermedia. he is currently
working on a multichannel video installation work titled "spectrum" and doing
live electronic improvisational performances with composer dominic cramp.
