Jim Staley "Don Giovanni"
(EIN002/CD)
Jim Staley's studio band featuring the kinetic trombonist with Ikue
Mori on drums and drum machines, electric and acoustic harps played
by Zeena Parkins, Birmingham- based electric guitarist Davey Williams,
and the Tokyo vocalist Tenko. A reconstructed montage of improvisations.
A hyper-suite of Mozartean dogfights and lyric synchronicity. Five master
virtuosos of the proto-form stir up the red soup. Primal non-verbal
vocals, didgeridu sub-bass, electric power, southern slither, pointillistic
pop, noise-gasms, and much more, all tied neatly together by producer
Fred Frith.
"Though you won't hear any Mozart on this disc of freewheeling improvisation,
the results are always evocative, and the instrumentation allows for
a pleasingly broad palette of sonic textures". - Steve Holtje,
The New York Review of Records
"...for such a sprawling and ambitious work, the overall results are
quite astounding." - James Lien,
CMJ New Music Report
